Kolkata : The Circular Railway of Kolkata is a peerless mass transit system – operational since 1984. Over the last 04 decades, Circular Railway has proved to be a path breaking concept that has revolutionised the public transport system in Kolkata and will continue to facilitate the cultural capital of India in times to come.

Although the unique network of Circular Railway is spread over 44 Km with 21 prominent stations enroute, the most scenic and happening station amongst them is probably Prinsep Ghat station. As we leave Eden Garden station towards south, a fascinating green corridor welcomes the passengers. The several sprawling stretches of verdant greenery around Prinsep Ghat station alongwith magnificent Hooghly river bank makes it ideal for visitors to have a leisurely walk. After getting down, the street vendors will immediately offer you some mouth watering snacks like Masala Muri, Panipuri, Paprichat, Pao bhaji etc. Filled with beautiful ambience, a peaceful stroll with a fascinating boat ride will certainly complete the gala evening enjoyment. Near Prinsep Ghat you can taste delicious icecreams from the renowned parlour SCOOP. While proceeding towards Prinsep Ghat stations, we can locate the famous Gwalior monument built around 1950 in the memory of British officers, perished during British expedition against Maharaj of Gwalior.

Away from the hustle and bustle of Kolkata & surrounded by lush greenery, the famous Prinsep Ghat Memorial was built in the year 1943. It was named after the eminent Anglo-Indian scholar – James Prinsep. Designed by W.Fitzgerald, it is a Palladian Porch monument rich in Greek and Gothic inlays. Infront of the station, we can witness mammoth structure of cable-stayed VIDYASAGAR SETU, also known as Second Hooghly Bridge. Being one of the longest cable-stayed bridges in India capable to withstand earthquakes and strong winds, the iconic 822 meters long bridge was designed by famous Schlaich Bergermann Partner of Germany and constructed by Hindustan Construction Company in the year 1992. The imposing structure of Vidyasagar Setu definitely enhances the aesthetic appeal of Prinsep Ghat station. Near the station, we can witness the famous Jetty called Man-O-War, constructed to commemorate the brave role of Indian Navy in the Second World War.
