Heavy Torrential Rain Disrupts Train Services at Howrah & Sealdah Divisions

Eastern Railway Kolkata

Kolkata: Heavy and continuous overnight rainfall in Kolkata has led to severe waterlogging at Howrah station yard, Sealdah South station yard, Chitpur North Cabin and multiple car sheds, disrupting train operations on Tuesday morning.

Despite the deployment of water pumps at several points, the situation remains critical as floodwater from adjacent civil areas continues to flow back into the railway premises, making the drainage process extremely challenging.

Impact on Train Services

Railway authorities have introduced an emergency service plan to cope with the situation. Several trains have been cancelled or curtailed, and suburban services are running in a restricted manner.

Sealdah Division Updates:

  1. Sealdah North & Main Line – Limited suburban services are running, originating from Platform No. 7.
  2. 13113 UP Hazarduari Express – Cancelled from Kolkata.
  3. 13177 Sealdah–Jangipur Express – Cancelled from Sealdah.
  4. Sealdah South Section – Complete suspension of train movement due to severe waterlogging.
  5. Circular Railway Line & Chitpur Yard – Services suspended as tracks remain submerged.

Commuter Hardship

Thousands of daily commuters faced difficulties reaching workplaces as suburban train services, the city’s lifeline, remained heavily disrupted. Many trains were short-terminated or short-originated, leading to confusion and overcrowding at operational platforms.

Railway officials have assured that restoration efforts are underway, with continuous pumping operations and monitoring of water levels across the affected sections. However, normal services are expected to resume only after a significant improvement in weather and drainage conditions.
