WORLD BREASTFEEDING WEEK OBSERVED BY B.R.SINGH HOSPITAL, SEALDAH WITH HUGE ARDOUR

Kolkata : World Breastfeeding week is celebrated globally in the first week of August every year, supported by WHO & UNICEF. This week is celebrated to protect, promote and support breastfeeding around the world. Breastfeeding is baby’s best start for a healthy life and has lifelong benefits for the health and well being of both mother and babies. Apart from supplying all the necessary nutrients in the proper proportions for babies, breast feeding protects new born babies against allergies, sickness, obesity and many other diseases like diabetes, cancer etc. Further, breastfeeding helps mothers recovering very quickly from child birth and also help in losing weight. More so, breastfeeding reduce risk for high blood pressure, breast cancer, ovarian cancer and type 2 diabetes for mothers. Theme for this year’s celebration is – “Closing the Gap: Breastfeeding support for all”.

B.R.Singh hospital of Sealdah division observed World breastfeeding week with full enthusiasm at the hospital auditorium in Sealdah. The programme was graced by Dr. Aniruddha Kirtania, Dr. Subhasish Das, Dr. Subhankar Home, Dr. Bijan Saha & Dr. Parul Dutta.

Dr.Kirtania In his précised and informative speech, underlined the importance of breastfeeding and supportive environment in family, society and work places. Dr Debashis Bandyopadhyay & Dr Beauty Sarkar emphasized upon the importance of skin to skin contact, zero separation of mother baby dyad & exclusive breastfeeding till 6 months. Dr Bijan Saha, a renowned Neonatologist, elaborated on different practical aspects of breastfeeding & Kangaroo mother care. Dr. Parul Dutta, a legend in neonatal nursing, guided the nursing fraternity & students through her motivating speech into the path of successful breastfeeding & betterment of neonatal care.

Dr Subhankar Home nicely narrated the importance of breastfeeding & conveyed vote of thanks to the guests & delegates. The deliberations was followed by two lucid presentation by Grindelia Mandal & Amrita Mondal, Nursing superintendents of NICU/BRSH, unveiling the myths & facts of breastfeeding and breastfeeding in Working women, today’s most important areas of intervention for successful breastfeeding.

The whole programme was organized by the Deptt. of Health & Family Welfare and Deptt. of Pediatrics, B R Singh Hospital. Doctors of different specialties, Nursing officials & paramedical staff and spectators took part in the awareness programme spontaneously. The entire session was really enlightening the and thoroughly informative for the captive audience.
