Kolkata: In a major breakthrough, Cyber Police Station Kolkata has cracked a high-value cyber fraud case involving a fake FedEx parcel scam, arresting three accused from Gujarat for defrauding a Kolkata woman of ₹78,30,000. The arrests were made in connection with Cyber PS Case No. 28/2024 dated 27.03.2024, registered under Sections 66C/66D of the IT Act and 120B/419/420/170/465/467/468/471 IPC.
How the Scam Unfolded
The complainant,Dipannita Dhar (61), resident of Kankurgachi, received an automated call on 09.03.2024 claiming to be from FedEx Courier Service, Andheri East, Mumbai. She was falsely informed that her parcel had been cancelled and asked to contact ‘customer care’.
Believing it to be related to her regular online purchases, she responded to the instructions.
Once connected, the fraudsters told her that a parcel in her name allegedly contained 200 grams of MDMA and other illegal items, being sent to a “Mr. Zhang”. They further claimed her Aadhaar card was misused and a case had been lodged against her.
To intensify fear, the scammers impersonated a Deputy Commissioner of Police and later sent forged documents falsely shown as issued by the CBI and Reserve Bank of India.
They then instructed her to transfer money as a “security deposit” for verification, assuring its return after clearance and warning her not to discuss it with anyone.
₹78.3 Lakh Transferred in Two Tranches
Between 12–13 March 2024, the complainant transferred a total of ₹78,30,000 through RTGS via her bank accounts after liquidating her fixed deposits with the help of her driver.
Funds transferred:
- ₹54,50,000 on 12.03.2024
From Axis Bank, Kankurgachi Branch (A/c No. 212000100003433) - ₹23,80,000 on 13.03.2024
