STOP THE SPARK: Sealdah Division Urges Public to Prevent Garbage Burning Near Railway Tracks

Eastern Railway Kolkata Railway West Bengal

Kolkata : In view of the serious fire hazards caused by improper disposal and burning of waste near railway tracks, Sealdah Division has issued a strong appeal to the general public and daily commuters to prioritise safety and act with collective responsibility.

With the onset of the dry season, the risk of fire incidents has increased significantly. Even a minor act of negligence can escalate into a major accident, endangering passengers, railway staff, and critical infrastructure.

Major Safety Concerns

The Division has specifically urged citizens to:

  • Refrain from throwing dry leaves, plastic waste, paper, or other flammable materials near railway tracks
  • Avoid discarding lit cigarette butts or matchsticks in or around railway areas
  • Strictly avoid setting fire to garbage or waste piles near railway lines

Such materials can ignite quickly and lead to uncontrollable fires.

Ground fires near railway tracks pose a severe threat to:

  • High-tension Overhead Equipment (OHE) wires
  • Sensitive signalling and communication systems
  • Trackside cables and electrical installations

The intense heat and smoke from such fires can cause electrical tripping, cable damage, signalling failures, and significant disruptions in train services. These incidents may result in property damage, delays, and serious risks to human life.

Safety of Passengers Is the Top Priority

Sealdah Division has reiterated that passenger safety and the uninterrupted movement of trains remain its highest priorities. However, safeguarding the railway network is a shared responsibility that requires active cooperation from the public.

Unlawful dumping or burning of waste near tracks not only violates safety norms but also threatens the city’s vital transportation lifeline.

A Call for Responsible Action

The Division appeals to every citizen to:

  • Dispose of waste responsibly
  • Avoid burning garbage near railway premises
  • Stay vigilant and discourage unsafe practices in their communities

Public awareness and responsible behaviour are crucial in preventing avoidable tragedies.

Let us work together to eliminate preventable fire hazards and ensure the smooth, safe, and uninterrupted operation of train services across the city.
