Kolkata: A compelling battle between defending champions and elite newcomers is set to unfold on Sunday, December 21, at the 10th edition of the Tata Steel World 25K Kolkata, a World Athletics Gold Label Road Race. Three globally acclaimed runners, all making their maiden appearances in the 25K distance, will vie for top honours in one of India’s most prestigious road races.
Speaking at a media meet-and-greet on Thursday, reigning World Marathon Champion Alphonce Felix Simbu struck a calm and confident note.
“I don’t feel pressure. I see running as both joy and responsibility—to represent my country well. With a new generation rising, every race is about growth and preparing for bigger challenges ahead,” said the Tanzanian star.
Tebello Ramakongoana of Lesotho, 29, who earlier this year clocked a national record 2:06:18 while finishing runner-up to Ethiopian Dawit Wolde at the Xiamen International Marathon, expressed readiness for Sunday’s contest.
“The 25K is the perfect bridge between the half-marathon and the marathon. Every race prepares me for bigger dreams ahead,” said Ramakongoana, who has extensive experience in half-marathons.
Topping the men’s field is Uganda’s double Olympic champion Joshua Cheptegei, who shared his emotional connection with the host nation.
“India is like a second home to me because my international journey truly began here. Coming back to race and seeing how the sport has grown in India is something I deeply celebrate,” Cheptegei said.
Kebede Returns in Quest for Historic Hat-Trick
In the women’s race, Ethiopian star Sutume Asefa Kebede returns to Kolkata aiming for an unprecedented third consecutive victory. Kebede not only won the race twice previously but also set a stand-alone world best for the 25K two years ago on these very roads.
Facing a strong field this year, Kebede remains confident.
“I have prepared very well, my training is complete, and with confidence and experience behind me, I am ready to deliver a stronger performance than last year,” she said at the press conference.
Adding to the competitive edge, race promoters Procam International have announced a USD 25,000 World Record Bonus to incentivise record-breaking performances at this year’s edition.
With a total prize purse of USD 142,214, the top three finishers in both men’s and women’s categories will receive USD 15,000, USD 10,000 and USD 7,000, respectively. An additional USD 5,000 Event Record Bonus is also on offer.
Former champion Degitu Azimeraw of Ethiopia, winner of the inaugural edition in 2017, and seasoned Kenyan campaigner Agnes Keino are expected to add further intrigue to the women’s contest.
“I am happy to be here, and I believe God will strengthen me on Sunday to run my best. With the support of my family and teammates, every race becomes part of my testimony. I’m really looking forward to the experience,” said 37-year-old Keino.
