Kolkata: Eastern Railway has achieved another significant advancement with installation at longest ‘R’ type portal of overhead installation in the ongoing efforts to enhance commuter experience on the suburban Rail network with all 12-coach EMU over Sealdah Main line. With the extension work for Platforms No. 1 to 5 of Sealdah nearing completion, commuters can anticipate a transformational shift in their daily travel routine with all 12-coach EMU locals.

The conversion of suburban EMU locals of Sealdah Main & North line sections into 12-coach EMU trains marks a pivotal moment in the history of Rail transportation in this region. This ambitious project, which has been underway for some time now, is rapidly progressing towards fruition.

Last night, a crucial milestone was reached with the erection of the ‘R’ type portal with a boom length of 33.70 meters at Sealdah North. This portal boasts the longest span over the Sealdah Division of Eastern Railway, symbolizing the remarkable engineering feats accomplished in this endeavour.

The extension work encompasses a multitude of tasks, including masonry work, yard layout modifications, points and crossings realignment, signalling circuit adjustments, overhead supply mast relocation, and overhead pattern layout revisions. These efforts are aimed at facilitating the seamless operation of 12-coach EMU trains, thereby enhancing passenger capacity and ensuring a more comfortable commuting experience.

Upon completion of the platform extension and other associated upgrades, both Sealdah Main & North line sections will be equipped to accommodate 12-coach EMU rakes. This expansion will significantly alleviate congestion, enhance passenger flow, and ultimately elevate the quality of life for commuters traversing the suburban sections of Sealdah.

The Sealdah Division of Eastern Railway remains committed to prioritizing passenger comfort, safety, and convenience. As we forge ahead with these transformative initiatives, we extend our gratitude to commuters for their patience and cooperation during this period of construction and upgrade.
