Birbhum, Raju Mal : With mere days left for Deepanwita Kali Puja, Purandarpur’s Bandhob Samity is gearing up to mesmerize devotees with a majestic 50-foot-tall Kali idol.
Established in 1940, this iconic samity has been organizing one of Birbhum’s most notable Kali Pujas, renowned for its colossal idols. Previously, the samity crafted a 55-foot-tall masterpiece.
Initially, smaller idols were crafted, but for the past 35 years, the samity has consistently created larger-than-life structures. Although COVID-19 led to smaller idols for two consecutive years, this year’s 50-foot-tall idol promise to awe devotees.
Amlan Banerjee, a prominent club member, shared with thebengal.in : “We’re thrilled to see thousands flock to witness the magnificent idol each year, and with immense joy, we celebrate this Kali Puja.” Adhering to administrative guidelines, a 50-foot-tall idol of Goddess Kali is being created this year.
Three skilled artisans and four assistants are meticulously crafting the idol using:
- 60 bamboo poles
- 3 kahons of hay
- 5 truckloads of soil
- 30-35 kg Babui rope
- 15 kg of thread.
The idol will be displayed at Purandarpur’s Bandhab Samity playground. The seven-day festivities will feature cultural events, culminating in a grand finale. This year’s budget allocates Rs. 6 lakhs for the colossal idol and cultural programs.
