Kolkata: Narkeldanga EMU carshed, the oldest carshed, was commissioned in 1963 after conversation from steam shed and since then it’s playing a pivotal role in the operation and maintenance of EMU trains. This unique EMU carshed is comprehensively equipped to perform routine maintenance, repairs and overhauling of EMU trains. It has excellent facilities for washing and cleaning trains, ensuring EMU trains are clean and convenient for commuters. Further, it provides secure storage for EMU trains, particularly during harsh weather conditions, when they are not in service.
Down the memory lane, the first electric train (Push pull type) started operations in Sealdah on 23.11.1963. In the year 1981, the first 9 coaches rake constituted at Narkeldanga. On 04.08.1990, Electric Shanting car (M/C No. 10740) was introduced in place of Disel Shunting. Subsequently, the first 12 car EMU rake was introduced in Sealdah – Ranaghat section on 16.12.2002, which was maintained by Narkeldanga Carshed.
In recent past, under the dynamic leadership of Shri Deepak Nigam, DRM/Sealdah, Division has completed critical infrastructure upgradation to accommodate 12 coach trains from all platforms of Sealdah. As a part of that endeavour, Narkeldanga EMU carshed has accomplished commissioning of 12 coach rake and extention work of pit lines on 12.03.2024, so as to enable conversation of 100% 12 car EMU rake train service. In another stellar technological advancement, 3-phase EMU rake was also been introduced in Narkeldanga Carshed on 25.04.2024.
For the last 61 years, the unique Narkeldanga Crashed has significantly enhanced capacity and improved passenger experience at the station. The pearless EMU carshed enables quick maintenance and repairing, for the sake of minimising train down time and at the same time ensuring reliable services. The age old carshed has been impeccably ensuring safe operations by rectifying potential safety issues. More so, it optimises maintenance and operational processes leading to increased efficiency and reduced costs.
