SEALDAH DIVISION – SECTIONAL SPEED OF GOBAR DANGA ENHANCED FROM 50 KMPH TO 110 KMPH

Kolkata Railway

Kolkata: In yet another major infrastructure upgradation, the layout of Gobar Danga has been successfully corrected to enhance the sectional speed from 50 KMPH to 110 KMPH. The massive layout correction was accomplished at Gobardanga Railway Station on February 15th and 16th, enhancing safety and efficiency of train operations significantly. A meticulously planned mega block, executed in between 23:30 hrs and 09:00 hrs., saw the orchestrated coordinated efforts of the Operating, Engineering, S&T and TRD Departments of Sealdah Division. Over 400 labourers, supported by a fleet of track machines, tower wagons and earthmoving equipment – worked tirelessly to accomplish the project within the designated timeframe under the dynamic leadership of Sri Deepak Nigam DRM/Sealdah.

The following extensive work focused on this mega block for a crucial layout correction at Gobardanga station, which had safety hazards. For track re-alignment, two points were shifted, and 500 meters of curved track were slewed to achieve the desired alignment. This correction will improve train speeds and ride quality through the station immensely. Ten Overhead Equipment masts were relocated to accommodate the new track alignment. These masts had been pre-erected during the preparatory phase, minimizing possible disruptions during the mega block. The realignment encompassed 0.5 kilometers of wiring, including a crossover. Final checks and adjustments to the crossover alignment were conducted during a subsequent corridor block by replaceing and shifting 11 meters towards the Sealdah (SDAH) end. This complex operation also included the relocation of point junction boxes, DC track circuit bonds, and six glued joints. This upgrade enhances the reliability and safety of point operations at this critical location.

Impressively, several other essential maintenance and operational upgradation activities were also carried concurrently under the shadow of Gobardanga mega block, leveraging the opportunity to minimize disruptions to train services. These shadow works, carried out at various locations, highlight the efficient planning and execution of Sealdah Division.
At Chandpara , deep screening of Platform 2 line was performed using BCM machines 388 and 718. This process removes accumulated ballast and improves track drainage, contributing to long-term track health.
Between Dattapukur – Bira section, deep screening of plain track was undertaken using cutting edge technologies by deploying BCM machine 331. In Chandpara -Bongaon Section, tamping of the UP and DOWN lines was completed and A range of maintenance activities were carried out as detailed hereunder:-

(a) Periodic Overhaul (POH) of 10 cantilevers and one section insulator.

(b) Annual Overhaul (AOH) of Overhead Equipments at 8 locations, lightning arrestors at 8 locations in between Gobardanga and Chandpara).

(c) Maintenance of two full gantries at Gobardanga and Chandpara.

Sri Milind K Deouskar, General Manager/ Eastern Railway has hailed completion these herculean complex concurrent works, completed during the shadow of the Gobardanga mega block, which underscores Eastern Railway’s constant focus on comprehensive maintenance and infrastructure upgradation ensuring minimum passenger inconvenience.

The successful completion of these core tasks during the mega block demonstrates Sealdah Division’s relentless commitment to modernization and infrastructure improvement. The project will result in smoother train operations in the entire section reducing travel times and enhanced safety for passengers.
