New Delhi: Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Upendra Dwivedi and his wife Sunita Dwivedi, President of the Army Wives Welfare Association (AWWA), have pledged to donate their organs at Army Hospital (Research & Referral). This landmark commitment lends major momentum to the Armed Forces Organ Retrieval & Transplantation Authority (AORTA), which has become a leading force in India’s organ donation movement.

Under the guidance of Director General, Armed Forces Medical Services (DGAFMS), Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin, AORTA has set a national benchmark in organ retrieval and transplantation. The Indian Army has already registered a record by mobilising over 26,000 personnel to pledge organ donation in a single campaign.
Speaking at the event, General Dwivedi described organ donation as “a service to humanity and an extension of the Armed Forces’ ethos of sacrifice and courage.” He urged serving personnel and their families to step forward and lead society by example. He also commended AORTA for its tireless efforts in building awareness and inspiring the Armed Forces community.
In recognition of frontline healthcare workers, the Army Chief presented Chief’s Recommendation Cards to three staff members engaged in organ transplant care, including a housekeeper whose meticulous work in maintaining hygiene and sanitation was highlighted as critical to patient well-being. This gesture underlined the Army Medical Corps’ dedication to compassionate and holistic patient care.
The event also honoured donor families in a solemn ceremony, acknowledging their courage and generosity in giving the ultimate gift of life through organ donation.
