Kolkata: With Diwali just around the corner, ASG Eye Hospital, one of India’s leading eye care institutions, has announced a special initiative to safeguard children from eye injuries caused by firecrackers. The hospital is offering free consultation and necessary surgeries for children under 15 who sustain eye injuries during the festive season.
The initiative will be available at all ASG Eye Hospital centres from October 15 to 24, 2025. While consultation and surgery will be free, patients are required to cover costs related to pharmacy, anesthesia, and optical services.
Firecracker-related eye injuries remain a significant public health concern in India. According to 2023 national data, over 2,000 cases were reported across the country, with around 60% involving children under the age of 15. Alarmingly, nearly 10% of these injuries resulted in permanent vision loss, emphasizing the critical need for preventive measures and timely medical intervention.
“Children are particularly vulnerable during Diwali celebrations. This initiative reflects our commitment to community welfare, promoting safe celebrations and preventing avoidable vision damage,” said a spokesperson from ASG Eye Hospital.
Key Safety Measures for Diwali Eye Protection:
- Always wear protective glasses or goggles when handling or near fireworks.
- Maintain a safe distance of 5–6 meters when lighting firecrackers.
- Supervise children at all times and prevent them from handling firecrackers themselves.
- Avoid using illegal or domestic fireworks; opt for certified, eco-friendly products.
- Never hold fireworks in your hands while igniting them.
- Keep water buckets, sand, or fire extinguishers nearby for emergencies.
- Avoid alcohol or substances that impair judgment while handling firecrackers.
- In case of an eye injury, do not rub the eye or remove embedded objects; seek immediate professional medical help.
