Manipal Hospital, Dhakuria Achieves Another Milestone with Dual-Chamber Leadless Pacemaker Implantation on 81-Year-Old Patient

Kolkata: In a remarkable advancement for cardiac care in eastern India, Manipal Hospital, Dhakuria — a unit of the Manipal Hospitals Group, one of India’s leading healthcare networks — has successfully performed a minimally invasive dual-chamber leadless pacemaker implantation on an 81-year-old male patient, marking yet another milestone in modern heart treatment.

The complex procedure was led by Dr. Pradip Bhowmik, Consultant – Interventional Cardiologist at Manipal Hospital, Dhakuria, on Dulal Kanti Ghosh, a retired mechanical engineer from Kolkata.

Ghosh had been admitted following multiple episodes of syncope (fainting) and shortness of breath. Comprehensive cardiac evaluations — including ECG, Holter monitoring, echocardiogram, and blood tests — revealed sick sinus syndrome (a malfunction of the heart’s natural pacemaker) and severe bradycardia (unusually slow heart rate).

Given his advanced age and high creatinine levels, Dr. Bhowmik and his team opted for a dual-chamber leadless pacemaker — a revolutionary, stitch-free, minimally invasive system that was recently launched in India — rather than conventional pacemaker implantation or open-heart surgery.

The entire procedure was completed within 15–30 minutes, without any surgical incisions. The patient was discharged the next day, showing no post-operative complications, and has since resumed a normal, healthy lifestyle.

Speaking about the achievement, Dr. Pradip Bhowmik said,

“This minimally invasive dual-chamber pacemaker marks a significant leap forward in cardiac care, particularly for elderly patients with multiple medical challenges. The device not only offers superior pacing support compared to earlier single-chamber models but also eliminates the need for stitches, minimizes infection risk, and provides long-term cardiac stability. With an impressive lifespan of up to 25 years, it ensures lifetime support and can be replaced when needed.”

Expressing his gratitude, Dulal Kanti Ghosh shared,

“Before the procedure, I was constantly anxious due to frequent fainting and dizziness. Under the care of Dr. Pradip Bhowmik and his team, I underwent the dual-chamber pacemaker implantation safely and smoothly. Today, I feel completely healthy and confident. I am deeply thankful to Manipal Hospital, Dhakuria, for restoring my quality of life.”

The success of this advanced pacemaker implantation underscores Manipal Hospital’s leadership in adopting cutting-edge cardiac technologies, reaffirming its commitment to providing safe, patient-centric and globally benchmarked healthcare solutions.
