Kolkata: Italian cricketers on Sunday shared a special practice session with 32 schoolchildren at Eden Gardens, ahead of their historic first-ever T20 World Cup match against Scotland.

The interactive session was organised under the ICC–UNICEF initiative Cricket 4 Good, aimed at promoting children’s Right to Play. Girls and boys from various Kolkata schools bowled, batted and fielded alongside the Italian players, who also offered technical tips, signed autographs and interacted warmly with the students.

The Italian team arrived in Kolkata on Saturday afternoon and headed directly to Eden Gardens before beginning their net practice. Under the supervision of coach Mohsin Sheikh, Italian batters and bowlers actively participated in drills with the children, motivating the budding cricketers.

Speaking on the occasion, UNICEF West Bengal Chief Dr Monjur Hossain highlighted the importance of creating safe spaces for children to play and learn.

“Children must have access to safe environments where they can play with confidence, joy and happiness. Through initiatives like Cricket 4 Good, UNICEF and the ICC continue to promote the Right to Play for children’s overall development,” he said.

Italian wicketkeeper-batter Gian-Piero Meade expressed his excitement about the session, saying the interaction with children was joyful and inspiring.

“We coached the kids and had a lot of fun together. It was wonderful to see their smiles and enthusiasm. Some of them were technically very sound, especially a few fast bowlers,” Meade said.

During the interaction, students also asked the players how they remain focused when cheered by large crowds. The players shared that maintaining concentration and giving their best on the field helps them handle pressure.

For the young participants, the experience proved memorable. Budding all-rounder Hiramon Bairagi said the tips from international players would help him in future matches, while 14-year-old Anushka Sarkar said she learned the importance of enjoying the game and maintaining fitness.

Coach Mohsin Sheikh praised the enthusiasm of the children, particularly the girls and said such clinics provide valuable exposure and inspiration for young cricketers.

The session showcased how sport can serve as a powerful tool for social development, combining international cricket with children’s well-being and empowerment.
