Kolkata: In a proactive step towards strengthening community safety and personal empowerment, a special Karate training session was organised for residents of B.D. Block, Salt Lake. The programme was conducted under the expert guidance of Hanshi Premjit Sen, President of the Karate-Do Association of Bengal, with the objective of spreading awareness about effective self-defence techniques through structured and disciplined training.

The session witnessed enthusiastic participation from residents across age groups, particularly youth and women, reflecting a growing awareness about the importance of personal safety and physical fitness in urban communities.

Focus on Practical Self-Defence & Discipline

The training programme was carefully designed to combine:

  • Practical self-defence techniques for real-life situations
  • Basic blocking, striking and escape methods
  • Mental discipline and focus-building exercises
  • Physical fitness drills to enhance strength, flexibility and reflexes

Hanshi Premjit Sen emphasised that karate is not merely a combat sport but a way of life that instils confidence, discipline and respect. He highlighted that structured martial arts training equips individuals—especially women and young people—with the ability to remain calm and act decisively during emergencies.

Civic Support & Community Initiative

The initiative was undertaken by Ratna Bhowmick, Councillor of Ward 41 of the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation, under the guidance of Sujit Bose, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Fire and Emergency Services, Government of West Bengal.

Councillor Ratna Bhowmick stated that community-driven programmes such as these are essential to promote safety awareness and encourage holistic development among residents. She added that in today’s fast-paced urban environment, self-defence training plays a crucial role in boosting confidence and preparedness.

Encouraging Community Participation

The atmosphere during the session was energetic and disciplined, with participants actively engaging in drills and interactive demonstrations. Many attendees expressed interest in continuing regular training sessions, indicating a strong community demand for sustained martial arts programmes in the area.

Parents present at the event appreciated the initiative, noting that karate training not only enhances physical strength but also develops character, concentration and emotional resilience in young learners.

Towards a Safer & Stronger Community

The programme marks a significant step toward community empowerment in Salt Lake. With increasing awareness about personal safety and fitness, such initiatives contribute meaningfully to building a confident, self-reliant and disciplined society.

Organisers hinted that similar training sessions may be conducted in other wards in the future, further extending the reach of self-defence awareness across Bidhannagar.
