Kolkata: In a significant boost to public healthcare infrastructure, the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC)-run ESI Hospital Maniktala has achieved a major milestone with the addition of 19 state-of-the-art Intensive Therapy Unit (ITU) beds. With this expansion, the total ITU bed strength of the hospital now stands at 52, making it one of the largest and most well-organised critical care facilities within the ESIC network in the state.

The newly constructed block will be inaugurated by Moloy Ghatak, Hon’ble Minister for Labour, Government of West Bengal. The occasion will also be graced by Sujit Bose, Hon’ble Minister of State for Fire & Emergency Services, as Special Guest.

Among other distinguished dignitaries expected to be present are Supti Pandey, Hon’ble Member of the Legislative Assembly; Swapan Samaddar, Hon’ble Mayor-in-Council, Kolkata Municipal Corporation; Abanindra Singh, IAS, Secretary, Ministry for Labour; Achintyo Mandal, Hon’ble Regional Director, ESIC; Dr. Indranil Das, Superintendent, ESI Hospital Maniktala; Dr. Satyabroto Sarkar; and Dr. Atanu Bhadro. Strengthening Critical Care Within the Government System

The addition of 19 advanced ITU beds is expected to significantly enhance the hospital’s capacity to manage critically ill patients. Referral patients from other ESI hospitals across the state will now have improved access to modern, high-quality intensive care services at Maniktala.

This expansion is set to:

  • Reduce dependence on private tie-up hospitals
  • Lower government expenditure on outsourced critical care
  • Ensure advanced and safe treatment within the public healthcare framework
  • Improve patient outcomes for insured working-class beneficiaries

Officials highlighted that the expansion reflects a broader vision of self-reliance and strengthening institutional capacity within the public healthcare system.

Commitment to Workers’ Health

As a key institution under ESIC, ESI Hospital Maniktala primarily serves insured workers and their families. The enhanced ITU infrastructure is seen as a major step toward protecting the health security of the working class, ensuring that advanced critical care services remain accessible and affordable.

Hospital authorities expressed confidence that with this upgrade, ESI Hospital Maniktala will emerge as one of the leading government healthcare institutions in West Bengal, offering modern, safe, and quality medical services.

The inauguration marks not merely an infrastructure upgrade, but a strong affirmation of the government’s commitment to expanding and modernising public healthcare for the people who need it most.
