Kolkata :Two books celebrating the life and legacy of eminent mathematician Prof. J. C. Misra were formally launched on Saturday at the Ramakrishna Mission Institute of Culture, Golpark, Kolkata. The event brought together academicians, students, and admirers to honour Prof. Misra’s remarkable contributions to mathematics and education.
Held at Turiyananda Hall, the programme unveiled “A Traveller in an Unknown Land,” Prof. Misra’s autobiography, and “A Mathematics Wizard in Different Eyes,” an edited volume reflecting on his life and influence through the voices of colleagues, students and well-wishers.
The event was presided over by Swami Suparnananda, Secretary of the institute. The Chief Guest was Ajoy Kumar Ray, former Director of Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology Shibpur. Suman Chakraborty, Director of Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, addressed the gathering virtually, while U. K. Chatterjee, former professor at IIT Kharagpur, attended as Special Guest.
The programme began with an inaugural song by Jayasri Roy Sharma, followed by a welcome address by Sumita Mukhopadhyay, after which the books were officially unveiled.
The edited volume “A Mathematics Wizard in Different Eyes” presents personal reflections from colleagues and former students, highlighting Prof. Misra’s dedication to teaching, mentorship and academic integrity. Meanwhile, his autobiography “A Traveller in an Unknown Land” traces his intellectual journey and reflects on research as a lifelong exploration of the unknown.
The event also featured reflections from family members and former students, including Subhas Chandra Misra of Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, Sudip Misra of IIT Kharagpur, and Rajeev Agarwal, CEO of EDUVERSE.
The programme was attended by scholars, students from IIT Kharagpur and IIEST Shibpur, and well-wishers, with many participants also joining virtually via live streaming.
