Kolkata to Host World Bicycle Day Celebration Under Fit India Sundays on Cycle on June 7

Kolkata : Kolkata is set to celebrate World Bicycle Day with a large-scale cycling event under the Fit India Sundays on Cycle movement on June 7, bringing together thousands of cyclists, sportspersons, students and fitness enthusiasts to promote healthy and active living.

The announcement was made during a press conference held at the Conference Hall of Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan (VYBK), Salt Lake Stadium, on Friday.

The press conference was chaired by Shri Nisith Pramanik, Minister-in-Charge of the Department of Youth Services and Sports, Government of West Bengal, in the presence of Shri Sibananda Mishra, Regional Director (In-Charge), Sports Authority of India (SAI), Netaji Subhas Eastern Centre (NSEC), Kolkata.

Addressing the media, Shri Pramanik emphasized the importance of cycling as a simple, sustainable and effective way to maintain fitness and improve overall health. He urged citizens, especially young people, to actively participate in the movement and incorporate physical activity into their daily routines.

“Cycling is not only an excellent form of exercise but also a sustainable mode of transport that contributes to a healthier lifestyle and a cleaner environment,” he said.

Highlighting the growing impact of the Fit India Sundays on Cycle initiative, Shri Sibananda Mishra said the movement has already engaged more than 30 lakh cycling enthusiasts and reached over 7 crore citizens across India.

He called upon people from all walks of life to join the World Bicycle Day celebrations and strengthen the nationwide message of fitness, wellness and active living.

The World Bicycle Day Celebration under Fit India Sundays on Cycle will be organised by the Sports Authority of India, Netaji Subhas Eastern Centre (NSEC), Kolkata, in association with the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of West Bengal, at Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan on Sunday, June 7.

Shri Nisith Pramanik will attend the programme as the Chief Guest, while Dr. Sharadwat Mukherjee, Cabinet Minister, Government of West Bengal, will grace the occasion as the Special Guest.

Organisers expect participation from more than 5,000 people, including cyclists, athletes, students, youth groups and fitness enthusiasts from across the city and surrounding districts.

The event aims to encourage people to adopt cycling as a regular fitness activity while reinforcing the Fit India Movement’s vision of creating a healthier and more active nation. Through community participation and awareness, the programme seeks to inspire citizens to embrace fitness as a way of life and contribute to a culture of wellness and sustainability.
