Kolkata: Engineers’ Day 2026 was observed by the Builders’ Association of India (BAI), Eastern (Kolkata) Centre on Tuesday with a focus on the contribution of engineers and contractors to Bengal’s infrastructure growth. The programme was held at The Lalit Great Eastern Kolkata.
PWD & PHE Minister Dr Ajoy Kumar Podder, Panchayat & Rural Development Minister Dilip Ghosh and Tollygunge MLA Papiya Adhikary attended the programme.
Addressing the gathering, Dr Podder said engineers were central to infrastructure development and stressed the need for closer coordination between the government and the construction industry for timely and quality execution of projects.
Dilip Ghosh also highlighted the role of engineers and contractors in building infrastructure and supporting economic development in Bengal. He called for greater coordination between the government and industry to address challenges and speed up development.
A key part of the programme was the felicitation of Executive Engineers, Chief Engineers and senior engineering officials from departments and agencies including PWD, CPWD and Metro Rail for their contribution to infrastructure development.
The event also brought contractors’ concerns into focus. BAI members discussed issues including pending payments and problems affecting the timely execution of infrastructure projects. The association stressed the need for continued dialogue between the government and the construction sector to resolve such issues.
Rajib Manna, Chairman, BAI Eastern (Kolkata) Centre, said Engineers’ Day was an occasion to recognise the contribution of engineers and contractors to the country’s infrastructure and economic development. He stressed the importance of government-industry cooperation in strengthening infrastructure.
The programme also featured a presentation on BAI’s role and contribution to the construction and infrastructure sector.
Engineers’ Day is observed every year on September 15, marking the birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Sir M. Visvesvaraya, one of India’s most celebrated engineers and statesmen.
The BAI Eastern (Kolkata) Centre said it would continue to work with engineers, contractors, government departments and other stakeholders to address sectoral challenges and support infrastructure development.
