Kolkata: Under the visionary leadership of Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Minister for Railways, Information & Broadcasting and Electronics & Information Technology, the Sealdah Division of Eastern Railway is set to undergo a comprehensive infrastructure transformation aimed at meeting rising passenger demand and ensuring seamless suburban and long-distance rail connectivity.
Highlighting the Government of India’s commitment to strengthening urban rail networks, Ashwini Vaishnaw stated:
“We are expanding coaching terminals in key cities to meet growing passenger demand and reduce congestion. These initiatives will modernise the railway network and significantly enhance nationwide connectivity.”
Multi-Layered Strategy to Remove Bottlenecks
To transform the daily commuter experience, Sealdah Division has adopted a multi-pronged infrastructure augmentation plan focused on eliminating operational bottlenecks and enabling higher train frequencies with improved precision and punctuality.
Major Expansion of Stabling Infrastructure
To optimise rake management and ensure smooth departures, the division is significantly increasing stabling capacity across multiple locations.
- Sealdah (Woodgola) will get four new stabling lines
- Belgharia siding will be expanded with six additional lines
- Kalyani (KYI) will receive four new stabling lines
Additional stabling facilities are also being integrated at Bongaon, Krishnanagar City (KNJ), Canning, and Diamond Harbour, creating high-capacity hubs to support future traffic growth.
New Loop Lines to Improve Punctuality
To reduce train detention and prevent slower or goods trains from obstructing high-speed passenger services, new loop lines are being constructed at Kulpi, Lalgola and Gede. These interventions are expected to significantly improve overall train punctuality and operational efficiency.
Yard Remodelling and Signalling Modernisation
Comprehensive yard remodelling works will be undertaken at 13 strategic stations, including major junctions such as Krishnanagar City, Bongaon, Barrackpore and Diamond Harbour. Outdated track layouts will be replaced with modern, streamlined configurations designed to accommodate nearly double the passenger traffic projected by 2030.
In parallel, the division has planned automatic signalling modernisation on key suburban corridors, including:
- Lake Gardens – Budge Budge
- Baruipur – Diamond Harbour
- Sonarpur – Canning
- Ranaghat – Krishnanagar
These upgrades will improve train handling capacity, reduce congestion and enhance service reliability.
Critical Line Capacity Projects Prioritised
To strengthen regional connectivity and support high-frequency suburban services, three major line-capacity enhancement projects have been prioritised:
- Doubling of the Ranaghat–Bangaon section
- Construction of a third line between Ranaghat and Krishnanagar City
- Construction of a third line between Kalyani and Ranaghat
Leadership and Long-Term Vision
DRM Sealdah Shri Rajeev Saxena stated that these projects are being executed under the guidance of Shri Milind K. Deouskar, General Manager, Eastern Railway. The planned upgrades aim to permanently address long-standing operational challenges such as platform shortages, engine reversal delays and terminal congestion.
The division will also continue surveys to identify additional locations for new stabling lines, maintenance pits, and allied infrastructure, ensuring preparedness for future growth.
With this holistic infrastructure roadmap, Sealdah Division is positioning itself to deliver a more reliable, punctual, and passenger-friendly railway service for millions of commuters across the region.
