As a part of that continuous endeavour, M Venkatesan, Chairman, National Commission for Safai Karmachari, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India chaired a meeting at Sealdah with Divisional officers to review the implementation of the “Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act, 2013“.

The meeting had the presence of Deepak Nigam, DRM/Sealdah, ADRMs and concerned branch officers alongwith Safai Karamcharis of the division.
During the meeting, Venkatesan, the Chairman enquired the officers about National Safai Karamcharis Finance and Development Corporation scheme, which is set up for ensuring all round socio-economic upliftment of the Safai Karamcharis and manual Scavengers and its holistic implementation in the division.

Further, he also clarified various facilities under the guidelines of the commission regarding insurances provided by the Government including uniforms, toolkits, health, hygienes etc. He also interacted with the safai karamcharis and addressed their grievances. In addition, he urged the officers to work in coordination and extend every possible support to the Safai Karamcharis of Sealdah Division.

After holding meeting with Divisional officers, Chairman Shri Venkatesan inspected Sealdah station premises and also circulating area where he interacted with Safai Karmacharis to understand the ground realities. Later, he expressed his satisfaction over the initiatives taken by Sealdah Division in this regard.
