Murshidabad, Raju Mal : A tragic boat capsize incident occurred at Shamserganj and Farakka ghats in the Ganges River on Wednesday evening as Cyclone Danah made landfall. A sudden fierce storm caused several boats to overturn.
The incident took place at Lohapur Sikdarapur and Dhuilyan municipality’s Ghatal, where several dinghies and boats overturned. Nearby, boats were swept away at Arjungpur Ganga Ghat.
Reports indicate that at least 10 people from two blocks were swept away by the river. Many managed to swim ashore, while locals rescued several others. Unfortunately, many remain missing.
Sanjay Choudhury, a relative of the missing victims from Dhuilyan Ghat, informed Bengal News that five people were on board their boat, with two managing to return to shore and receiving medical treatment. The remaining three, including two children and an elderly person, are still unaccounted for.
A search operation is underway to locate the missing individuals, with police officials deployed at the ghats. Locals claim that many fishermen were caught off guard when the storm suddenly intensified, causing multiple boats to capsize and sink.
A local resident from Sikdarapur Ghat reported seeing two people floating in the river and immediately rescued them, rushing them to the local hospital for treatment. The rescued individuals are approximately 35 years old.
Many survivors have been admitted to Anup Nagar Hospital, where family members are grieving and seeking information about their loved ones. The riverbank is filled with mournful cries as the community comes to terms with the tragedy.
