WAP-7 Turns 25: Celebrating a Quarter Century of Power and Performance on Indian Railways

Kolkata: The WAP 7 Locomotive was developed by Chittaranjan Locomotive Works (CLW) and was introduced in service for Indian Railways from 2000. Since then, it has become one of the most powerful and numerous Passenger Locomotives in India, which is capable of hauling 24 couch passenger trains at a high speed of 110-140 KMPH.

It’s a true all rounder in all aspects, particularly known for it’s unmatched reliability and performance.

The WAP 7 Locomotive is a class of 25 KV AC Electric Locomotive with massive power output of 6125 HP, designed for higher speed with advanced gear ratio. There are some high speed variants of WAP7 loaded with some advanced propulsion system and hotel load converter, which can generate speed upto 180 km/ph for using it on premium trains like Shatabdi, Rajdhani and Duranto Express.

Nowadays, WAP 7 Locomotives are fitted with HOG, eliminating the need for separate power cars and reducing maintenance cost. Indigenously designed WAP7 remains one of the most successful locomotives, serving Indian Railways relentlessly for the last 25 years.
