Pulmonologist Dr. Sujan Bardhan explains why humidity, mold and dust mites increase respiratory problems during the rainy season and shares simple preventive measures.
Kolkata: While the monsoon brings relief from the scorching summer heat, it also creates conditions that can worsen asthma and allergies. According to Dr. Sujan Bardhan, Consultant, Pulmonology, the rainy season often sees a rise in patients suffering from persistent cough, wheezing, nasal allergies and breathing difficulties.
Dr. Bardhan explained that the rain itself is not responsible for these health issues. Instead, the increase in humidity creates an ideal environment for mold, fungi and dust mites, which are common allergy triggers.
“Mold grows easily on damp walls, poorly ventilated rooms and water-logged areas inside homes. It releases tiny spores into the air, which can trigger inflammation in sensitive airways and worsen asthma symptoms,” he said.
Another major concern during the monsoon is the rapid growth of dust mites. These microscopic organisms thrive in humid conditions and are commonly found in mattresses, pillows, carpets and upholstered furniture. Their allergens can cause sneezing, blocked nose, throat irritation and breathing problems, while uncontrolled allergies may also make asthma more severe.
How to Stay Safe During the Monsoon
Dr. Bardhan advised people, especially asthma patients, to keep their homes dry and well-ventilated. Curtains, bedsheets, pillows and carpets should be cleaned and dried regularly to prevent the growth of mold and dust mites. Avoiding cigarette smoke, incense and strong fragrances can also help reduce allergic reactions.
He further stressed that asthma patients should continue taking their prescribed medications and inhalers without interruption. Stopping treatment without medical advice can increase the risk of severe asthma attacks.
Warning Signs That Need Immediate Medical Attention
Dr. Bardhan urged people to seek urgent medical care if they experience:
Severe breathlessness
Difficulty speaking due to shortness of breath
Persistent chest tightness
Blue lips or fingertips
Frequent need for a rescue inhaler
He concluded that with proper precautions, regular medication and timely medical consultation, people with asthma and allergies can stay healthy and enjoy the monsoon season without major complications.
