Barasat : North 24 Parganas and neighbouring districts received a major boost in specialised cancer treatment as Narayana Hospital Barasat launched comprehensive Breast Oncology Services, taking another step towards its “Organ Specific Cancer Care Management” programme.
The newly introduced service, available every Wednesday from 10 am to 2 pm, will focus on the complete spectrum of breast cancer care—from prevention and early detection to treatment and recovery.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), breast cancer accounts for nearly 19.7% of all cancers diagnosed among women in Kolkata’s urban and suburban regions, highlighting the growing need for specialised care.

Dr. Pragati Singhal, Consultant, Breast Oncology and Onco-plastic Surgery, said the Barasat region has long required dedicated breast oncology services as the number of breast cancer cases continues to increase.

“Early diagnosis is the key to better outcomes. These services will help women receive timely diagnosis and appropriate treatment, significantly improving survival and quality of life,” she said.
She added that the initiative would play a crucial role in promoting awareness, encouraging regular screening and improving survival rates through early detection.

Speaking at the launch, Subhasis Bhattacharya, Facility Director, Narayana Hospital Barasat, said the introduction of breast oncology services marks another milestone in developing a comprehensive surgical oncology programme at the hospital.

“With this initiative, we are moving further towards Organ Specific Cancer Care Management. We will also organise screening camps where eligible participants will receive free mammography facilities. These specialised oncology services will benefit people from North 24 Parganas, Nadia, neighbouring districts and Greater Kolkata,” he said.

The hospital said the initiative aims to improve access to specialised breast cancer treatment closer to home, reducing the need for patients from North Bengal and adjoining districts to travel long distances for expert care.
