Kolkata: Ruby General Hospital has announced a major expansion of its surgical infrastructure with the addition of six state-of-the-art modular Operating Theatres (OTs), including two dedicated transplant OTs and two advanced Robotic Surgery OTs. The expansion further strengthens the hospital’s position as a major healthcare provider in Eastern India and enhances its capacity to undertake complex and life-saving surgical procedures.
The new infrastructure has been added to the hospital’s existing five super-specialty Operating Theatres, taking the total number of highly specialised surgical suites to 11.
The hospital also marked the official inauguration of two advanced robotic surgical systems — an Orthopaedic Total Knee Replacement (TKR) Robotic Surgery System and the globally recognised Da Vinci Robotic Surgical System for general and advanced surgical procedures.
The new facility and robotic systems were inaugurated by Dr. Kamal Kumar Dutta, Chairman and Managing Director; Dr. Sourav Dutta, Director; and Ruby Dutta, Director, Ruby General Hospital.
Six New Modular Operating Theatres
The newly added modular OTs have been designed with advanced infrastructure and infection-control measures, including laminar airflow systems.
The expansion includes:
- 6 new modular Operating Theatres
- 2 dedicated transplant OTs for complex organ transplant procedures
- 2 Robotic Surgery OTs designed to accommodate advanced robotic surgical systems
- 5 existing super-specialty OTs, taking the hospital’s total capacity to 11 specialised surgical suites
The new modular OTs are expected to become operational shortly, while the newly introduced robotic systems are already fully operational and available for patient services.
Advanced Robotic Surgical Systems
The Da Vinci Robotic Surgical System will support minimally invasive, high-precision general and advanced surgical procedures. The technology is designed to provide surgeons with enhanced precision and control while potentially supporting faster recovery for eligible patients.
The Orthopaedic TKR Robotic Surgery System will be used for Total Knee Replacement procedures, enabling highly precise implant positioning and alignment.
Hospital Leadership Highlights Focus on Technology and Patient Care
Speaking at the inauguration, Dr. Kamal Kumar Dutta, Chairman and Managing Director, Ruby General Hospital, said the expansion aims to bridge the gap between advanced global medical technology and accessibility for patients in the region.
Dr. Sourav Dutta, Director, highlighted the integration of artificial intelligence and robotic technology into the hospital’s surgical infrastructure, stating that these advancements are aimed at enhancing patient safety and reducing hospital stays where clinically appropriate.

Advanced Transplant Facilities Strengthened
The press meet was attended by eminent medical experts, including Dr. Pratik Das, Nephrologist, and Dr. T. K. Saha, Transplant Surgeon. Both experts highlighted the growing need for advanced transplant facilities in Eastern India and noted the importance of strengthening regional infrastructure for complex transplant procedures.
The hospital’s multidisciplinary robotic surgery expertise was also represented by Dr. Debarchan Ghosh, General and Robotic Surgeon, and Dr. Dipanjan Bhadra, Orthopaedics and Robotic Surgeon, who shared insights into the role of robotic technology in their respective specialties.
Ruby Cancer Centre Strengthens Robotic Oncology Capabilities
Highlighting the hospital’s comprehensive cancer-care infrastructure, Dr. Gautam Mukhopadhyay, Emeritus Surgical Oncologist and Director, Ruby Cancer Centre, said the introduction of the Da Vinci Robotic System adds another dimension to the centre’s surgical oncology capabilities.
According to Dr. Mukhopadhyay, Ruby Cancer Centre offers a comprehensive cancer-care ecosystem comprising medical oncology, surgical oncology, radiation oncology, haemato-oncology and stem cell transplantation, along with Nuclear Medicine, Digital PET-CT, onco-pathology, psychology and nutrition services.
With the latest expansion, Ruby General Hospital aims to further strengthen its surgical, transplant, robotic and oncology capabilities and provide patients across Eastern India access to advanced healthcare technologies.
The newly inaugurated modular Operating Theatres will be operational soon, while the robotic surgical systems are currently available for patient services.
