Kolkata: The Durga Puja organised by Paschim Putiary Tarun Dal Club in South Kolkata is known for its traditional approach and Sabeki-style Durga idol. This year, the club celebrated the 23rd edition of its Durga Puja, placing special emphasis on cultural programmes to bring more people together and make the festivities more enjoyable for the local community.
Unlike theme-based pujas, Paschim Putiary Tarun Dal continues to follow traditional customs and rituals. The club’s approach reflects Bengal’s rich cultural heritage, with the traditional style of idol-making remaining an important part of its celebrations.
Speaking about the puja, club president Prabir Kumar Das said that the club had completed 23 years of organising the festival and had maintained its traditional character throughout. He explained that the puja is not based on a particular theme but focuses on traditional rituals and the worship of Goddess Durga in the Sabeki style.
He added that the puja attracts a large number of visitors, including local residents and members of the general public, who come to seek the blessings of Goddess Durga and enjoy the cultural programmes organised by the club.
Prabir Kumar Das also highlighted the community-driven nature of the celebration. According to him, the club does not collect compulsory subscriptions from local residents. Instead, the puja is organised with the help of voluntary donations, reflecting the community’s participation and support.
Club secretary Shekhar Kumar Dutta said that this year the organisers had focused more on cultural programmes while keeping the overall budget under control. The objective was to involve more people in the celebrations and provide them with opportunities to enjoy a variety of cultural activities.
He further said that visitors had been enjoying the cultural programmes over the past six days. The club’s aim, he explained, was to make the festival more than just an occasion for offering prayers and viewing the idol. It also seeks to create a platform for community participation, cultural engagement and togetherness.
With its traditional rituals, Sabeki-style Durga idol and a strong focus on cultural activities, Paschim Putiary Tarun Dal Club continues to uphold Bengal’s traditional Durga Puja heritage while bringing the local community together through its annual celebrations.
