Kolkata: West Bengal is set to get a major push in defence manufacturing, with Jupiter Defence Private Limited allotted around 256 acres of land at the Jangal Sundari Karmanagari Phase II Industrial Park in Raghunathpur, Purulia.
The land allotment was announced at the ‘Allotment of Land for Industry’ programme organised by the Department of Industry, Commerce and Enterprises at Milan Mela Prangan in Kolkata on Wednesday.
The proposed project will come up as a large-scale integrated defence manufacturing facility, positioning it as a significant addition to West Bengal’s industrial and manufacturing landscape. The project is also being described as the state’s first major defence manufacturing unit.
The programme was attended by West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, along with Industry, Commerce and Enterprises Minister Tapas Roy and Minister of State Moumita Biswas Misra.
The development marks a significant expansion of Jupiter Wagons’ presence in the defence manufacturing sector, with the Purulia project expected to create a wider industrial ecosystem around the facility.
Speaking at the event, Murari Lal Lohia, Chairman Emeritus of Jupiter Wagons Limited, thanked the state government for facilitating the project and highlighted the importance of industrial development in West Bengal.
Vivek Lohia, Managing Director of Jupiter Wagons Limited, said the land allotment would help the company build manufacturing capacity in the defence sector while contributing to the broader industrial network in the region.
He said the project would support domestic defence manufacturing, local businesses and employment generation, while aligning with the broader national push towards self-reliance in defence production.
The proposed facility in Raghunathpur, Purulia, could also bring fresh industrial activity to a region that has been identified as an important destination for large-scale manufacturing investments.
With nearly 256 acres earmarked for the project, the development is expected to place Purulia on West Bengal’s emerging industrial map for defence-related manufacturing.
