Kolkata :A major railway accident was narrowly averted this morning in the Sealdah South section, thanks to the exceptional vigilance and quick response of an EMU train driver. The incident occurred between Deula and Magrahat stations, where an unidentified person had maliciously placed a railway sleeper on the track, exploiting the disruption caused by ongoing maintenance work in the area.
The alert loco pilot of the suburban EMU train noticed the sleeper on the track in time and acted swiftly, bringing the train to a halt and preventing what could have been a tragic mishap. The prompt action saved hundreds of lives and ensured the integrity of train operations in the section.
In a separate but related act of sabotage, banana leaves were deliberately thrown on the Overhead Equipment (OHE) wires between Deula and Magrahat, leading to disruption in train movement. Railway maintenance teams rushed to the location and removed the obstruction from the OHE, helping restore normal train operations in the affected section.
Railway officials have strongly condemned these dangerous acts of mischief, labeling them not only irresponsible but criminal in nature. “These kinds of actions put the lives of passengers and railway staff at risk and also cause severe inconvenience to daily commuters,” said a senior official from the Sealdah Division.
Sealdah Division has issued a stern warning and stated that tampering with railway infrastructure, particularly track equipment and overhead wires, is a serious criminal offense under the Railway Act. Authorities have assured that strict action will be taken against those responsible, and investigations are underway to identify and apprehend the culprits.
Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) of Sealdah, expressed deep concern over the incident and appealed to citizens to remain vigilant. “We urge all responsible citizens to support the Railways in keeping our network safe. If you see any suspicious activity near railway tracks or equipment, report it immediately. Your alertness can save lives,” he stated.
The Indian Railways reiterated its commitment to passenger safety and assured that all necessary steps are being taken to ensure secure and uninterrupted train services.
