Kolkata : On World Tourism Day, the Chaltabagan Durga Puja pandal welcomed foreign diplomats, cultural representatives, and their families to experience the vibrant spirit of Durga Puja in North Kolkata. The delegation included ambassadors, high commissioners, and members of the consular corps from countries including the UK, Estonia, France, Guatemala, Italy, Germany, Sri Lanka and Ukraine.
The guests were warmly received by Sundeep Bhutoria, Chairman of Chaltabagan Durga Puja Committee, along with members of the puja committee and other dignitaries. This year, Chaltabagan Durga Puja was honoured with the Biswa Bangla Sharad Samman 2025 Award in the Sera Bhabna category, recognizing its creative excellence.
The pandal this year offered a meticulous recreation of the architectural soul of old North Kolkata, showcasing its heritage buildings, grand havelis, and intimate streetscapes. The immersive design left a deep impression on the visiting diplomats, many of whom captured the sights through photographs and selfies.
Ambassador of Italy to India, Antonio Bartoli, shared his delight, saying, “The rhythm is engaging….it is a wonderful experience because it is inclusive. This is my first visit to Durga Puja but certainly not my last.” Similarly, Omar Castaneda Solares, Ambassador of Guatemala, described the experience as “great, beautiful, and amazing, exceeding all my expectations. I will cherish this unique experience all my life.”
Darrin Farrant, Director of the United Nations Information Centre, added, “This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. It’s so thrilling to be here in Kolkata.”
Highlighting the significance of the pandal, Bhutoria said, “To walk from Shyambazar to Shobhabazar through its narrow lanes is a journey through the city’s soul. We invited the diplomatic corps to share this living archive with the world and experience the intangible heritage that UNESCO has recognized.”
Chaltabagan Durga Puja continues to bridge cultural heritage and global appreciation, offering visitors an unforgettable glimpse into the rich traditions and timeless charm of North Kolkata.
