Kolkata: Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd. (GRSE) has scripted yet another engineering milestone by successfully fabricating and launching a 140-foot double-lane Modular Steel Bridge (MSB) in a record time of just seven days, significantly easing vehicular congestion at Lake Town on VIP Road, Kolkata.
The bridge, fabricated and launched on January 16, 2026, has been executed for the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) and marks the first-ever deployment of an advanced double-lane Modular Steel Bridge (Class-70) in the city of Kolkata.
Despite severe constraints posed by continuous heavy traffic at one of the city’s busiest corridors, GRSE’s team of expert engineers and specialized taskforce completed the entire operation within an unprecedented timeframe, setting a new benchmark in urban bridge construction.
This advanced version of the traditional Bailey Bridge has been designed using GRSE’s proprietary technology, coupled with meticulous workflow planning and execution. The bridge boasts a carriageway width of 7.50 metres, which is double the width of the earlier Bailey Bridge constructed by GRSE across the Kestopur Canal, thereby enabling smoother and safer two-way traffic flow.
Engineered for strength and durability, the Modular Steel Bridge features a galvanized surface finish, ensuring lower maintenance requirements and an extended service life. With a robust load-bearing capacity of up to 100 metric tonnes, the bridge is capable of facilitating heavy vehicular movement, including emergency and commercial traffic.
The successful completion of this project further reinforces GRSE’s reputation as a leader in rapid-deployment infrastructure solutions, particularly in complex urban environments.
