Kolkata: To ensure a seamless, safe, and spiritually enriching journey for millions of devotees travelling to the sacred confluence, the Sealdah Division of Eastern Railway has finalised an extensive and forward-looking action plan for Gangasagar Mela 2026.
Addressing a press conference on Thursday, Rajeev Saxena, Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), Sealdah, outlined the comprehensive arrangements being put in place to manage the anticipated surge of pilgrims. The special operational measures will remain in force from January 9 to January 17, 2026, with dedicated Mela Officers stationed at Kakdwip to ensure round-the-clock coordination and swift decision-making.
A Pioneering Transit Blueprint
Marking a significant improvement over previous years, Sealdah Division has introduced a highly structured and pioneering transit blueprint aimed at eliminating confusion and ensuring a smooth, dignified journey to the holy site. The plan focuses on five critical pillars—Train Services, Crowd Management, Passenger Amenities, Security, and Medical Emergency Support—setting a new benchmark in spiritual tourism logistics.
“These landmark initiatives are designed to offer a hassle-free experience for devotees while maintaining the highest standards of safety and comfort,” railway officials said.

Enhanced Train Services
- Augmented Train Frequency: For the first time, 23 pairs of EMU services will operate daily during the mela period, including 10 pairs of dedicated Mela Special trains between Sealdah and Namkhana/Kakdwip.
- Despite capacity constraints caused by the single-line section between Lakshmikantapur and Namkhana, this record-high number of services is expected to significantly reduce waiting times and prevent overcrowding.
- The duration for additional train services has been increased to seven days from six days in the previous year.
- The total number of trains has risen sharply, from 72 services in 2025 to 126 services in 2026, ensuring smoother movement of pilgrims.
Exclusive Platform Management & Organised Boarding
To streamline operations:
- Platforms 15 and 16 at Sealdah and Platform 2 at Kakdwip have been earmarked exclusively for mela traffic.
- Each train is optimised to accommodate 2,000–2,500 pilgrims safely.
- In a first-of-its-kind initiative, queue managers will regulate boarding and de-boarding, preventing chaotic passenger movement and ensuring orderly flow.
Structured Crowd Flow System
A strict “First Come, First Served” boarding policy has been introduced, supported by a one-way passenger movement system to avoid cross-crowding.
At Sealdah:
- Entry: Through designated holding-area gates adjacent to the Sealdah South Metro entrance.
- Exit: Exclusively via the regular Sealdah South Gate.
- Entry from the regular Sealdah (South) area for Namkhana/Kakdwip-bound trains will not be permitted.
At Kakdwip:
- A portion of Platform No. 2 will function as a holding area, allowing only the number of passengers that can be accommodated in one train (approximately 2,500).
- All trains for Sealdah will depart from Platform 2, while trains for Namkhana will operate from Platform 1.
- Multiple layers of holding areas have been created to manage contingencies.
Integrated Holding Areas & Passenger Amenities
High-capacity Integrated Holding Areas have been established at Sealdah, Kakdwip, and Namkhana, offering more than basic waiting facilities. These include:
- On-site ticketing through M-UTS to avoid long queues at station counters.
- Comfortable seating, high-intensity lighting, and clean toilet blocks.
- These areas act as buffer zones, allowing pilgrims to rest in a dignified environment until boarding.
Additional measures include:
- Enhanced illumination and decorative lighting at Lakshmikantapur, Kakdwip, and Namkhana stations, including approach roads and foot overbridges.
- 24/7 water supply ensured through continuous operation of electrical pumps.
- Special sanitation teams from B.R. Singh Hospital and the Housekeeping Department deployed to maintain hygiene.
Ticketing, Security & Surveillance
- Additional 24/7 booking counters with M-UTS facilities will operate, with special assistance for elderly and Divyangjan (differently-abled) pilgrims.
- A robust security arrangement has been put in place with 54 officers and 340 RPF personnel, working in close coordination with other agencies.
- 24/7 CCTV surveillance will cover all station premises.
- Dog squads will conduct checks in passenger areas, waiting halls, and onboard trains.
- Night-bound EMU specials will have dedicated RPF escorts.
Medical & Emergency Preparedness
Pilgrim safety remains a top priority:
- Fully equipped medical booths have been set up at Sealdah, Kakdwip, and Namkhana.
- Doctors, paramedics, ambulances, and augmented first-aid facilities—including wheelchairs and stretchers—will be available round the clock.
- Tower wagons and electrical engineering teams will remain on standby at Lakshmikantapur to address technical emergencies.
Support Services & Communication
- “May I Help You” assistance booths manned by RPF and GRP personnel will guide passengers.
- Regular announcements will be made in Bengali, Hindi, and English, supplemented by temporary train information boards in all holding areas.
- Civil Defence volunteers, Scouts & Guides, and St. John Ambulance Brigade teams will be deployed on the ground to assist pilgrims.
