Siliguri: Manipal Hospital Siliguri, a unit of the Manipal Hospitals Group—one of Eastern India’s largest healthcare networks—successfully treated a 22-year-old student who sustained a severe head injury after falling from a third-floor rooftop while flying kites.

The patient, Ravi Gupta (name changed), a resident of Kishanganj, was admitted to the hospital on January 3, 2026, in an unconscious and critical condition. He was first assessed by Dr. Sinthi Pal, Consultant – Emergency Medicine, who conducted rapid evaluation and immediately initiated life-saving emergency interventions.

Following prompt stabilization in the emergency department, a multidisciplinary medical team was swiftly mobilized. The team included Dr. Anurup Saha (Neurosurgery), Dr. Samit Parua (Critical Care), Dr. Soibam Jaya Leima (Plastic Surgery), Dr. Penzing Dichen Bhutia (General Surgery), Dr. Manoj Agarwal (Ophthalmology) and Dr. Pankaj Kumar (Orthopaedics).

On arrival, the patient was provisionally diagnosed with traumatic brain injury accompanied by facial trauma, along with active nasal and oral bleeding. He was immediately intubated and shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for advanced life support. Comprehensive diagnostic investigations—including multiple CT scans of the brain, MRI of the brain and spine, CT scan of the face and X-rays—were conducted to assess the extent of injuries.

Under continuous monitoring and coordinated care in the ICU, the patient showed gradual but steady improvement. After stabilization, he was shifted to the general ward and subsequently discharged in a stable condition. He is currently recovering well.

Commenting on the case, Dr. Sinthi Pal, Consultant – Emergency Medicine, said,
“The patient was brought in an unconscious state, and our immediate priority was rapid assessment, airway stabilization, and initiation of life-saving emergency care. Early intervention and timely coordination with multiple specialties played a critical role in ensuring a positive outcome.”

Dr. Anurup Saha, Consultant – Neurosurgery, added,
“The patient sustained a significant traumatic brain injury due to a high-impact fall. Prompt airway management, rapid imaging, and timely neurosurgical and critical care intervention were crucial in preventing long-term neurological complications. His recovery highlights the importance of immediate trauma care and coordinated teamwork.”

Sharing insights from the critical care perspective, Dr. Samit Parua, Consultant – Critical Care, said,
“Managing polytrauma patients requires constant vigilance and seamless multidisciplinary coordination. This case involved complex airway management, intensive monitoring, and gradual weaning from ventilatory support. The patient’s steady recovery reflects both his resilience and the robustness of our critical care protocols.”

Expressing gratitude, the patient said,
“I don’t remember much from the first few days, but I know my life was saved because of the doctors and nurses at Manipal Hospital Siliguri. Their constant care and support helped me recover step by step. I am deeply grateful to the entire team for giving me a second chance at life.”
