Kolkata: Eastern India Optometric Association commemorated ”World Optometry Day 2024” in collaboration with Delhi Optometric Association at The Leprosy Mission Trust India: The Premananda Memorial Leprosy Hospital, Kolkata. The celebration started with felicitation of dignitaries associated with the organisations present in the program.
It proceeded with the speech of the President of Eastern India Optometric Association, Senior Optometrist Debashis Mondal, he shared his thoughts on how optometry plays a vital role in the society and how young optometrists can serve and contribute to mankind.
Senior Optometrist Madhumita Deb, General Secretary, Eastern India Optometric Association shared the importance of “Eye Donation – seeing is believing, please donate! So they can see the light, donate your sight. After you die, donate your eye. One eye donation can make two blind people see.”
Tapan Kumar Pati, Administrator, The Leprosy Mission Trust India, spoke on how eye health is related to leprosy cases which plays a crucial role and why one should get their eyes checked in regular interval.
Mark Moloy Amros, Manager, The Leprosy Mission Trust India, shared information on how the hospital is serving the poor and underprivileged class of the society with free health and eye check up camps, surgeries, medicines, rations, clothes, blankets and vow to continue the service in the near future.
Optometrist Debjani Chakraborty, Assistant Secretary, Eastern India Optometric Association, honoured The Leprosy Mission Trust India, Kolkata with a memento for their support and cooperation in the celebration. Tapan Kumar Pati presented a memento to the Eastern India Optometric Association to express gratitude for their collaboration.
The celebration started with a welcome song by Olipriya Deb. A free health and eye check up camp was organised inside the hospital premises and patients were given free medicines after the check up and was enlisted for free eye surgery if suggested by the practitioners.
Eastern India Optometric Association conducted a free workshop on Contact Lens Fitting And Assessment Guidelines for optometry students and interns. The hands-on along with detailed illustration of the workshop was hosted and demonstrated by Senior Optometrist Sushovan Nandi, Assistant Professor, IMS, Kolkata.
A poster competition was also arranged to encourage the students toward the subject. Geetam Das, optometry student won the poster competition for his acknowledgeable creativity and was appreciated with a memento by Senior Optometrist Arindam Roy.
Eastern India Optometric Association arranged free meal for the leprosy patients and patients participated in free check up camp. Senior Optometrist Madhumita Deb distributed the food to all the patients with care.
