Goa : The 56th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) 2025 began in Panaji, Goa, on Thursday with a vibrant opening ceremony featuring cultural performances and tableaux representing India’s diverse region

Breaking from tradition, Goa Governor Pusapati Ashok Gajapathi Raju and Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant inaugurated the festival by watering a Tulsi plant, symbolizing environmental sustainability.

Adding a festive flair, a grand carnival-style showcase formed part of the opening ceremony, with production houses presenting cinema-inspired tableaux. The National Film Development Corporation (NFDC), celebrating 50 years, unveiled a striking display featuring iconic posters from films such as Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron, The Lunchbox, and Salaam Mumbai. Another standout was a beautifully crafted tableau dedicated to Mahavatar Narsimha, which drew considerable attention from attendees.

In his address, Chief Minister Sawant underscored Goa’s growing stature as a premier film destination, noting the state’s world-class infrastructure, robust tourism ecosystem, and filmmaker-friendly policies. He highlighted reforms such as the film finance scheme and single-window clearance, which he said have strengthened Goa’s global positioning. “India is at the forefront of this creativity revolution and IFFI continues to be the bridge between Indian talent and global possibilities. IFFI is the platform where Indian creators, producers, and storytellers meet the world,” he said.

Governor Raju, attending IFFI for the first time, expressed pride in the festival’s international scope, with 270 films from 84 countries. He also acknowledged the contributions of former Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar in establishing IFFI as a permanent fixture in Goa. “This year, the festival brings together 270 films from 84 countries, offering a rich blend of world cinema, Indian cinema, and emerging talent. IFFI continues to be a meaningful platform for creative exchange and cinematic excellence,” he noted.

The opening film, The Blue Trail, a Brazilian feature directed by Gabriel Mascaro and winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the Berlin International Film Festival 2025, was screened as part of the inaugural program.

IFFI 2025 runs until 28 November, concluding with a grand closing ceremony the same day. The Waves Film Bazaar, inaugurated on 20 November, will continue until 24 November.
