Kolkata: Hepatitis B remains one of the most common liver infections worldwide, yet myths and misconceptions continue to fuel fear, confusion and social stigma. According to Dr. Manik Lal Thakur, Consultant – Gastroenterology, Narayana Hospital, Barasat, understanding the facts about Hepatitis B is essential for effective prevention, timely diagnosis and proper treatment.
One of the biggest misconceptions is that Hepatitis B spreads through casual contact. Dr. Thakur clarified that the virus does not spread by hugging, shaking hands, sharing food, sitting together, coughing or sneezing. Instead, it is transmitted through unprotected sexual contact, sharing contaminated needles, unsafe medical procedures, and from an infected mother to her baby during childbirth.
Another common myth is that every infected person will experience symptoms. In reality, many people with chronic Hepatitis B remain symptom-free for years while the virus silently damages the liver. If left untreated, it can lead to serious complications such as liver fibrosis, cirrhosis and liver cancer, making regular screening and monitoring essential.
Dr. Thakur also dismissed the belief that Hepatitis B cannot be controlled. He emphasised that vaccination remains the most effective way to prevent infection. For people living with chronic Hepatitis B, regular liver check-ups, a healthy lifestyle and appropriate medication can significantly reduce the risk of long-term liver damage.
He stressed that increasing awareness about Hepatitis B is crucial not only to prevent infection but also to eliminate the stigma faced by patients. With early diagnosis, vaccination and proper medical care, people with Hepatitis B can lead healthy and active lives.
